Coastal Cottage - Summer Rest

This is the story of two empty nesters who are ready to settle down and build their forever home. After four attempts to purchase property in Wilmington, their realtor presented the perfect lot on Beech Street, right off of Summer Rest Rd. The wide and deep, rectangular lot is a very natural wooded space that is high in elevation – allowing for mostly first floor living. The home will reflect the relaxed, coastal location with a cozy and elegant cottage feel that embraces the outdoor living spaces. The second floor will allow for massing and roof-lines to create architectural interest and accentuate the coastal cottage design. They will have the perfect amount of space – not too much for just the two of them, but ample space for hosting visitors and their son when he visits from college. A home is a reflection of the inhabitants. For her, the exterior appearance should cause a passerby to “smile” and say “oh, wow!”. She wanted an adorable cottage on the exterior that leads into cascading views from the front of the home, through to the rear outdoor living space. For him, (besides making her happy) a simple space for himself and his lively golden retrievers - hence the office/guest bonus room. The home is placed on a level plain, with the finished floor height no more than 3 steps above grade at any point, which will make indoor and outdoor spaces easily accessible and therefore more utilized. Full-time living will happen exclusively on the first floor, with an open concept floor plan that flows seamlessly between each space. The upper, secondary rooms are for family visitors and may include a fun bunk room for the nieces and nephews.
