ARDA Award Winners Custom Home 2019

At the 2019 MAX! Awards, the Bridge Project in Landfall took home Best Interior Design as well as Best Outdoor living. This home was a product of creative collaboration between Tongue & Groove and Phil Kean Design Group.

One glance at The Bridge House tells you that it is an architectural masterpiece. Allow the clean, guiding lines to draw you in and you’ll see the nuance: clever and calming water features, the generous and functional incorporation of glass, and the natural build materials that both blend into the landscape and rise from it as a tribute. It is a house that stands out, but undoubtedly belongs—a testament to the melding of luxury and usability that is a trademark of Tongue & Groove.

The residence boasts enticing design elements from the moment you spot the house from the street, to the moment you reach the front door and zen courtyard, and upon entering the home. Each detail and feature are like art, generating a Mid-Century masterpiece. Bridgett Mazer, Interior Designer for Tongue & Groove and owner of Bridgett Mazer Interiors, worked with the clients to bring the open spaces to life with beautiful textures and color.

More on Mid-Century Modern

Our State Magazine released a feature on the Spencer Residence in their March 2019 issue. This Nautical Contemporary home on Figure 8 Island was built and designed by Tongue & Groove. This residence was a GOLD winner in the 2016 Parade of Homes and was also awarded the “Artisan Home of Distinction.”

Marimar McNaughton wrote the article telling the Spencer’s unique story of how they came to choose the land that their ship inspired home now rests on. The history behind the lot is fascinating. This 4,364 SF home is paradise to Will and Christy Spencer!

“We don’t do much when we’re here. Coming down, sitting on the porch with a glass of wine. It’s not a very complicated equation.” – Christy Spencer, Homeowner.

The Bridge House Recognized for Superb Design

Tongue & Groove and Phil Kean Design Group Take Home “Best in American Living” Award for Luxury Single Family Custom Home

It is this attention to detail that sets The Bridge House apart. The crisp lines are striking, there is a traditional charisma that permeates the modern design cues, and many of the distinct features from the exterior carry into the interior, creating a sense of cohesion.

The Bridge House is not a surprise for Tongue & Groove; it is a standard example of the work the group prides itself on each day, no matter what the project. It is that same mindset that motivates their planning and design approach from conception to finished product. Each building is designed to be beautiful and to function precisely as the client desires. The Bridge House embodies this approach.

The clients who commissioned this project entertain prolifically, a lifestyle that calls for large amounts of usable space and the ability to host on both an indoor and outdoor level. The design cues inspire feelings of warmth as they welcome you into the home. From the rich, earthy tones of the wood that adorns fireplace mantel, beams, stairwell, kitchen island, and other accents to the intentional “less-is-more” approach, everything about the interior of The Bridge House beckons admirers of the exterior to come indoors and enjoy the space.

Gorgeous simplicity and convenient functionality are not synonymous with a lack of uniqueness or innovation, however. A folding door unit graces the home with ample sunlight when closed and easily facilitates indoor-outdoor entertaining, making it a beautiful and practical feature that stands out even when flawlessly blending into the overall design. The double-functioning wet bar between the kitchen and summer kitchen similarly adds a creative and innovative touch to the minimalist interior design.

It is the culmination of this excellence, this attention to detail, and this dedication to collaboration that led to The Bridge House. So, it is with great pride and gratitude that Tongue & Groove can accept the Best in American Living award for single-family home design. This prestigious award recognizes outcome, but it is the countless hours spent behind the scenes that truly deserve recognition. Without the tremendous effort and innumerable time invested in planning, design, communicating, adjusting, and innovating, The Bridge House would not be the success that it is today.

When you drink in the beauty of The Bridge House, take a moment to bask in the sublime artistic detail and let the harmonious details immerse you. Notice the texture of the stacked stone, the sharp complementary angles of the water features, and the irresistible wood accents before you look beyond the breathtaking aesthetics to see a home that fits the specific needs of its owners, and more, the culmination of inspiration and hard work. The structure is being awarded, and rightfully so, and through it, the creativity, dedication, and innovation that Tongue & Groove puts forth every day are also being recognized.

Tongue & Groove Residence Breaks County Sales Record at $5 Million
“How do you want guests to feel when they enter and leave your home?” This is a question often asked of Tongue & Groove clients in the beginning stages of design. A meaningful question that often results in an impactful and lasting impression. Tongue & Groove’s European style Bradley Creek residence undoubtedly leaves an everlasting impression on all who are welcomed. In this home, one feels an overwhelmingly invigorating sensation that you are looking upon something special, something of a relic, something truly unique and one of it’s kind. This one-of-a-kind home served as the estate for two beloved Tongue & Groove clients, and their family, for several years before selling this month at a record breaking $5 million dollars in New Hanover County. While Tongue & Groove is no stranger to this record, and associations with luxury custom homes in Wilmington, the home was not just a substantial price tag, it was a miraculous home with hand selected antique ornaments, superb craftsmanship and old-world design integrity. To reiterate the Wilmington Bizarticle and prominent Wilmington REALTOR, Vance Young

“‘The Airlie Road corridor is maybe the most sought-after address in New Hanover County,’ Young said, ‘and this particular property was world class in its old-world feel and it’s on the most valuable lot within the neighborhood. So it’s just a very unique combination of perfect location and exquisite design…Mark Batson [of Tongue & Groove] did a fantastic job on it, and everyone that looked at the house was blown away with the attention to detail and the quality. The Worsleys had done a tremendous job sourcing items throughout the home from all over the world.’”

“You become part of someone’s family in a project like this. It was very important to the clients that we got everything just right… I took great joy and care in working with them to make this home exactly what they dreamed of.” – Mark Batson

This outdoor space is accessible directly through a sleek, foldable door unit in the living room or from the kitchen which leads you through the outdoor kitchen and lounge area. The sleek pool and spa are the center focus of the design – featuring a wet deck, spill edge and floating column steps that allow you to “walk on water” from the lanai to the gate that leads to the community lake.

Surrounded by lush greenery from the lake forestry and golf course, this landscape design ties in modern planting features to embrace the style of the home with features such as patterned grass pavers, natural wooden plan boxes and simplistic, low shrubbery and trees that add texture and substance.
